Fall is officially here! The leaves are changing colors, the air is getting cooler and now is the time to enjoy one of the season’s best and most beloved treats—caramel apples from Hilliards Chocolates.
Before we get into the details of what makes our caramel apples so special, we beg the question—have you ever wondered where the idea of caramel apples came from? Well to start, the concept of coating crisp apples in something sweet came about in 1908 when a candy-maker first dipped apples in the red cinnamon candy he was selling for Christmas. It wasn’t until years later in the 1950s, however, that a Kraft Foods employee by the name of Dan Walker decided to switch things up a bit. Experimenting with an abundance of caramels left over from Halloween, caramel apples were born.
Perfecting the caramel apple
Over the years, Hilliards Chocolates has managed to perfect this fall treat, so much so that our homemade caramel apples are now the most anticipated seasonal item we offer. What’s our secret? Quality.
Each year, we visit the local C.N. Smith Farm in East Bridgewater to collect the largest, freshest, and crispest apples picked from the trees’ highest branches, where they reap the benefits of unfiltered sunshine. We start with McIntosh until they’re picked for the season, then moving on to Cortland and other premium varieties.
