Celebrate National Cherry Month with Cherry Cordials

If you love the rich flavor of cherries, then you are in luck this month! February is National Cherry Month, the perfect excuse to indulge in your favorite cherry-flavored dessert. Our favorite choice? Here at Hilliards Chocolates we especially enjoy cherry cordials. Dipped in milk or dark chocolate, these juicy maraschino cherry delights are made by hand – a delicious surprise for Valentine’s Day or any other evening.

History

A fruit that has been enjoyed for thousands of years, cherries have been cultivated since 300 B.C. and were loved by the Ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. The word “cherry” comes from the Greek word “kerasos”, meaning “of or for the birds”.

American colonists brought European cherries with them to plant in the New World, which already had varieties of its own growing, leading to the cross-breeding of the different strains. One of the most popular cherries to come from this experiment is the Bing cherry, a sweet cherry developed in Oregon during the late 1800s.

Nowadays, the United States is an obvious leader in commercial cherry production, accounting for 90 percent of crops.

Super Fruit

Not only is the cherry delicious, but it is also an incredible super fruit. The bright red cherry is filled with antioxidants good for heart health and anthocyanins that help to reduce inflammation in the joints!

This month, add cherries into your regular diet to experience their health benefits and indulge in a gourmet snack every once in a while with cherry cordials from Hilliards Chocolates. Order online to send a sweet surprise to your loved one or stop into one of our three Massachusetts shops for tonight’s dessert. We will be featuring long stemmed cherry cordials in stores only, just for Valentine’s Day!
